It’s not You, It’s just August

I don’t think gardens are supposed to look good in August. It’s too hot to be in them anyways. That’s my rationale and I’m sticking to it.

Last week I walked around the flower field and every weed jumped out at me, taunting and laughing in my face. But the jokes on them because I know their names and will trash talk them as I pull! The compost heap grows ever bigger this time of year.

All the dahlias seemed the same exact size as the week before. I kept looking and looking for buds and they kept alluding me until this morning. Finally found some sweet baby buds.

The rain came pouring down a lot and often last week. At first it was welcome but then it became too much.

But also last week, I cut the first blooms of a new variety- KA® Honeycomb. They’ve been holding beautifully in the vase even after being harvested in extreme heat.

We decided to become grateful for the rain because it has been keeping our pest pressure low and the powdery mildew away.

We embraced the hot temperatures as a chance to work inside and pot up the beautiful columbine seedlings that we started in June.

So even though it feels like you want to just walk away, it’s important to remember that it will change. August is hard but it’s hard for us all.

It’s not you, it’s just August.
